CFI and CFP celebrate Earth Day at Konde Secondary School

CFP Executive Director, Mbarouk Mussa Omar, and CFI Tanzania Country Director, J. Michael Tritchler, traveled to Konde Secondary School in the north of Pemba to celebrate Earth Day with students.  With assistance from the students and teachers over 200 trees were planted at the site of Konde’s new secondary school, which should open next year.

CFP would like to thank Konde Secondary School for inviting us for Earth Day, and we would especially like to thank Moh’d the Headmaster as well as Teacher Doug for arranging the event.

Mbarouk began by explaining the importance of environmental conservation, while of course making the students laugh.  He followed up the discussion with a demonstration of the proper way to plant a seedling.

The students were enthusiastic throughout.  In fact, only 20 students from the Environmental Club were expected, but an amazing 70 students showed up for the Earth Day!   It just goes to show that this new generation has grasped the importance of conserving their environment.

Happy Earth Day 2012 everyone!  See more photos below:

Tree planting at Two Schools on Pemba

On the 18th of May, CFI and CFI’s sister organisation, Community Forests Pemba, travelled to Uweleni Secondary School and Ng’ombeni primary school in Mkoani, Pemba to help plant over 100 trees. CFP brought mtondoo — a native hardwood — seedlings, cinnamon seedlings, and lychee seedlings.  Lychee is a native fruit tree which produces a small, sweet, spikey, red fruit.

Pemba is a very hilly region, and erosion is constant worry for both schools during the rainy season. So, with the help of CFP and CFI, students took to the hills around their schools to plant the trees as a way to prevent catastrophic erosion and conserve their environment.  More photos are coming soon…

A New Global Schools Link

CFI is proud to announce our newly updated Global Schools Link.

Last year CFI created the Global Schools Link, a pilot program focused on uniting schools from around the world with the goal of creating a cross-cultural, environmental learning experience.  The program was a success, and we thank all of the participating schools for their invaluable input.

After receiving and reviewing the feedback from both teachers and students, the CFI team has worked diligently over the last two months to roll out with an entirely new and updated Global Schools Link.

So please check it out, and if your school is interested in joining the Global Schools Link then Contact Us.
