Let’s Save the Farm! $102,455 Raised – $177,365 To Go
Endangered Forests – Saving Whaelghinbran Farm from Community Forests International on Vimeo.
Thanks to all your generous donations over $42,000 was raised in December alone!
Why Save Whaelghinbran Farm: The present owners of Whaelghinbran Farm, Clark (74 years old) and Sue (72) have reached a point where they can no longer farm. They’ve been farming organically and restoring their forest for over 35 years. Wouldn’t it be a shame to lose this piece of North American heritage? This farm demonstrates that people can live in harmony with nature, not against it. Let’s pick up the torch!
What’s Happened So Far: Clark and Sue have had to sell off over 300 acres in order to make ends meet and they want the remaining 580 acres to go to CFI. Thanks to Clark and Sue’s hard work the property boasts over 70 acres of certified organic farmland. In the forest, several trees are over 150 years old – what a rarity for the Maritimes! Clark and Sue have been working with the New Brunswick Community Land Trust to develop a plan for continuing their work beyond their lifetime and now it’s time for action. They would love to donate their land to CFI but cannot afford to do so – given the present situation they’re offering the land to CFI at half its appraised value.
The Future : Community Forests International has raised $102,455. Although that’s almost 5 times more money than the organization’s entire 2010 budget, the journey has just begun. Beyond saving trees and the farmland, CFI will put this property to work. The fields and forest will become a centre for education, where people can come to learn about sustainable farming and forestry. The woods will host cabins for visitors. The property and the spirit of the place will inspire innovation. Whaelghinbran Farm is a place where beliefs are lived.
