Pemba Research Nursery

In the winter of 2010 Community Forest Pemba, with support from Seeds for Africa, designed and constructed a test nursery in Shumba-Vyamboni, Pemba, Tanzania.  There, CFP Field Officer Abdallah experiments with species and nursery technology in order to identify which merit introduction to community nurseries across the island.

One of Abdallah’s most promising projects is the “Pod Press”.  This simple mechanical device allows the user to convert organic waste and soil into nutrient-laden seedling containers.  The use of these locally made, organic containers replaces dependence on expensive and environmentally harmful polyethylene seedling sacks.  In response to the success of Abdallah’s trials, CFI has initiated a fundraising drive in order to provide each of the 13 community nurseries on Pemba with a “Pod Press”.
