Giving Tuesday Causes We Love
Today is GivingTuesday, but we’re not asking you to give to us today. On this day, we want to celebrate all the great organizations that make the world more safe, equitable and sustainable.
This year was huge for our small team, and we are so thankful to each and every one of you who made it possible. We have big ideas for the year ahead and we know that we can count on our network to help transform these ideas into action.
However, in the spirit of solidarity, we want to use today to tell you about some of the causes that are close to our hearts. You all know that we work hard to preserve forests and that we care about the people connected to them. But, we also care about things like independent journalism, food security and gender justice, and we look up to all the amazing organizations that are championing these causes and helping to build a better future for people and the planet.
On this GivingTuesday, we hope you’ll consider supporting some of our heroes too:
Adsum House for Women and Children
Located in Halifax, Adsum for Women and Children shelters and houses as many as 90 people each day and more than 300 people in a year. Hundreds more use the organization’s services and support to meet their basic needs for safe and affordable housing, food, clothing and connection. These emergency services are critical—but what’s more, Adsum for Women and Children offers compassion to each woman and child accessing its services.
New Brunswick Association of Food Banks
Environmental Defence is one of our favourite environmental charities in Canada. The organization has done a lot of great work over the years holding businesses and governments to account on things like industrial pollutants; for example, contributing to the ban on BPA in plastic baby bottles and other food and drink containers. More recently, the organization has increased focus on climate action and most notably helped block the Energy East pipeline, while advancing clean energy investment and infrastructure in Canada.
NB Media Co-op
New Brunswick’s finest independent media outlet. Operating as a not-for-profit, the NB Media Co-op is free from the constraints of the profit motive, advertisers and state funding. This means that it can tell stories without fear of censorship and from the perspectives of those often ignored, marginalized or misrepresented in corporate media.
Medecins Sans Frontieres
Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is an emergency humanitarian medical organization that has helped tens of millions of people across the world. MSF provides urgent care in some of the world’s most difficult regions, while also supporting the medical training of local women in those regions so that gynaecological and obstetric care challenges are addressed from the ground up and in safety.
Apathy is Boring
Apathy is Boring is a non-partisan, charitable organization that supports and educates youth to be active and contributing citizens in Canada’s democracy. In the election off-season, the organization stays busy with Rise, a program designed to empower and support young people to get involved in their communities and cities. Apathy is Boring reminds youth just how important their voices are in shaping a better future and does so with a whole lot of wit and style.
