Forest Conservation

We need healthy forests now and for the future. That’s why we’re proud to be protecting the Wabanaki forest in Eastern Canada. By conserving these forests, the emissions that would be released if they were destroyed are avoided. These protected forests act as deepening carbon sinks with countless environmental, ecosystem, and community benefits.

The forests we protect are located on the unceded lands of the Mi’kmaq and Wolastoqiyik communities, and many are located in the Mi’kma’ki district of Siknikt.

Bring Back The Forgotten Forest

Across Canada, the east coast Wabanaki Forest remains largely unknown — even to those who call the region home. This unique forest type has been listed as one of six endangered forests in North America, and what remains is vulnerable to threats caused by climate change. But it doesn’t have to remain this way.
With your help, a future with diverse, old forests is possible.

Protecting Forests

If you have stewarded your forest with care, we’re here to help you continue to protect your property. In Atlantic Canada, young people moving away & weak markets have created a major gap in forest stewardship. As a result, many life-long landowners feel pressured to clear-cut their forests for income or retirement. We know these are big decisions. You can download our information for landowners guide to help make sense of it all.

Forest Carbon Offsets

Together with responsible companies, we are transforming the Wabanaki Forest into one of Canada’s greatest carbon storehouses. Not all carbon offsets are created equal—Community Forests International is committed to building carbon programmes that benefit rural forest caretakers and our shared planet.
