This International Day for the Conservation of Mangroves (or more simply, World Mangrove Day) you can support people-led restoration efforts to protect coastal communities and the diversity of life and livelihoods they support.

In 2021, Community Forests Pemba was approached by members of a small Pemban community named Mjini Kiuyu. Located directly on the coast along the [???] side of Pemba island, this community was experiencing devastating flooding because of rising sea levels and recent storms.
Without their protective mangrove ecosystem, homes and houses were being flooded and sometimes destroyed.
Community Forests Pemba stepped in, rallying the community together to plant thousands (???) of mangrove seedlings along the nearby coastline. Although not an immediate solution to flooding, these fast-growing trees will quickly provide a natural barrier between the people of Mjini Kiuyu and the threat of sea level rise.
What’s more, these wetland forests will quickly become home to a diversity of land and ocean life — including crabs, fish, and more — providing a source of food and sustainable livelihood for the community!
We know that supporting the people and communities who live and work most closely with forests is not only essential for long-term solutions to work, but also the right thing to do.
Studies show that mangroves can sequester an incredible four times more carbon than rainforests. Most of this carbon is stored in the soil beneath mangrove trees. In total, the world’s mangroves sequester approximately 24 million metric tons of carbon in soil per year!
The Farmer Field School programme is a huge success—but there are more and more communities asking for our support. We’ve reached thousands of farmers already, but there are thousands more who are looking for the support needed to create resilient farming livelihoods. That’s why we’re on a mission to double the number of farmers enrolled in Field Schools over the next two years.
